The lecturers urged the Federal Government to reopen tertiary institutions, as the education sector cannot be allowed to become stagnant

The Congress of University Academics, CONUA, has expressed readiness to resume classes amidst coronavirus pandemic.

CONUA is a faction that broke away from the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

In a press statement released in Abuja after its National Executive Council meeting, titled, ‘Stop intimidation of CONUA members’, the lecturers urged the FG to reopen schools as soon as possible.

CONUA’s National Coordinator, Niyi Sunmonu, disclosed that its members are ready to resume.

Part of the statement read, “CONUA further stated that the education sector cannot continue to stagnate, as it appears that COVID-19 would continue to be a threat and we must, in the circumstance, learn to strive to lead our normal life.

“Union thus urged the government to make available everything that can help our universities to resume work as is being done elsewhere in the world.”

Following several protests by higher institution students, there are indications that schools may reopen across the country soon.

Speaking during the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 press briefing in Abuja, the Minister of State for Education, Mr Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, said the Federal Government was considering reopening schools amidst coronavirus pandemic.
